Camellia Japonica, originating from Japan, is the evergreen, spring flowering species of Camellia. Camellia Japonica shrubs tend to produce masses of colourful flowers over fine glossy foliage. The red flowering variety Camellia Japonica Dr. Burnside is so named after the American A.F. Burnside in whose garden this variety was first discovered and documented in the early 1960s.
Dr. Burnside tends to flower in early spring and occasionally may have a second flowering in late summer. After flowering, Camellia Japonica Dr. Burnside retains is role as a decorative evergreen shrub for the remainder of the year due to the luxuriant dark green foliage. Particularly of note with this variety is its success in cooler climates while also thriving in warmer ones. It is hardy and versatile. It has a nice bushy upright habit and it flowers profusely and reliably.
